Vastu for a new home: what to settle at the drawing stage

Living room opening to the view through full-height glazing

Vastu is easiest to follow at the drawing stage, before walls are built. Traditional guidance places the entrance to the north or east, the kitchen in the south-east, the main bedroom in the south-west and the puja room in the north-east, with the centre of the house kept open.

Why Vastu belongs in the first sketch

Moving a kitchen or a staircase on paper costs nothing. Moving it after the slab is cast means breaking plumbing, wiring and structure. If Vastu matters to you, tell your architect at the first meeting so the plan is built around it.

Main entrance

Traditional Vastu guidance prefers a main entrance facing north, east or north-east. Your plot's road side decides a lot here, so an experienced architect will work out the best position within the side you have rather than forcing a direction.

Where the main rooms usually go

RoomTraditional directionPractical note
KitchenSouth-eastAlso catches morning light and keeps afternoon heat away from living areas
Main bedroomSouth-westHeavier, quieter corner of the house
Puja roomNorth-eastKeep it clear of toilets and stairs
Living roomNorth or eastGood daylight without harsh western sun
StaircaseSouth or westAvoid the centre and north-east

Toilets, water tanks and the centre

  • Avoid toilets in the north-east corner.
  • Underground water tanks are usually placed in the north or north-east; overhead tanks in the south-west.
  • Keep the centre of the house (the brahmasthan) open and free of heavy columns where the structure allows. A courtyard or double-height space does this well.

Balancing Vastu with light, air and the plot

Not every plot allows every rule. Good design finds the arrangement that respects Vastu where it matters most to your family, and still gives every room daylight, cross-ventilation and a sensible layout. That balance is the architect's job, and it is much easier to find on paper than on site.
